SMSTS vs SSSTS: Which Site Safety Course Do You Need?

SSSTS and SMSTS are often treated as interchangeable site tickets, but they are aimed at different levels of responsibility. SSSTS is built around supervision. SMSTS is built around managing construction work. The right choice depends on the job you are moving into, not which certificate sounds more senior.

SSSTS is for supervisors; SMSTS is for managers

The simplest distinction is the level of responsibility.

SSSTS, the Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme, is designed for people who supervise workers and work activities. That can include working foremen, team leaders and new supervisors who need to understand their safety duties.

SMSTS, the Site Management Safety Training Scheme, is designed for site managers and people who plan, monitor and control work across a construction site. It covers a wider management view because the role carries wider responsibility.

CITB's current Site Safety Plus scheme rules list SSSTS as a two-day course and SMSTS as a five-day course. Duration is only part of the decision. The important question is whether the course matches the work you are expected to do.

Do not let your certificate lapse

CITB’s course pages were checked on 27 September 2026: SSSTS takes two days, SMSTS five days, and both certificates last five years. Complete the relevant refresher before the expiry on your certificate; after expiry, the full course is required again. Confirm attendance and entry rules with the provider before booking.

Record your actual expiry and choose reminders. SSSTS and SMSTS reminders use 120, 60 and 30 days so you have time to look for a course. Calendar reminders work without an account. UKTJ does not renew or verify your certificate.

Compare providers without confusing the certificate

The price examples below were checked on 27 September 2026 on the providers’ own pages. They are a small neutral sample, not a cheapest-course ranking, a recommendation or a promise of availability. There are no paid referral links here.

Use the official CITB course and provider locator, then compare the exact date, delivery method, VAT, materials, assessment and cancellation terms. Ask whether your employer can fund the course. A CPD bundle, awareness course or “alternative” using similar words is not proof of CITB SSSTS or SMSTS certification.

Which course fits common construction roles?

A working foreman who allocates tasks and watches a small team will commonly see SSSTS in job adverts. A site manager accountable for programme, subcontractors, inspections and overall site safety will commonly see SMSTS.

Assistant site manager roles sit in the middle. Some employers accept SSSTS while the person is developing. Others require SMSTS because the assistant covers the manager and holds wider duties. Read the responsibilities and ask the employer rather than assuming from the word assistant.

If you are comparing assistant roles, use the assistant site manager salary guide to judge responsibility and package together.

What these courses do not prove

Neither course proves that you can run a site. They give structured safety training, but competence also comes from experience, supervision, judgement and the qualifications attached to your role.

An SMSTS certificate does not automatically give you a CSCS Black Manager card. Card routes depend on the relevant occupation and recognised qualification. Likewise, an SSSTS certificate does not turn a new operative into an experienced supervisor.

Be wary of anyone selling either course as a guaranteed promotion. The strongest route combines training with evidence that you have already led work safely, kept records, communicated clearly and dealt with problems on a live project.

What to check before paying for training

Open current vacancies in your area and write down what employers request. Check whether the role asks for SSSTS, SMSTS, an NVQ, a particular CSCS card, first aid or trade experience.

Then ask the provider whether the course is the current CITB Site Safety Plus course, what is included in the price and what you need to attend. If your employer is supporting the move, ask whether they will fund the course or release you for it.

Official source

Course purpose, duration and five-year certificate validity were checked against CITB's current SSSTS course page and SMSTS course page. The CSCS supervisors and managers card page explains why safety training alone is not the qualification route for a manager card.

Use this guide for choosing a route, not as proof that a particular site or employer will accept a certificate.

Step-by-Step Career Path

1

Start with the role you actually want

Look at current adverts for supervisor, foreman, assistant site manager and site manager roles in your area before choosing a course.

2

Choose SSSTS for supervisory responsibility

SSSTS is designed for people supervising teams and work activities on construction sites.

3

Choose SMSTS for site-management responsibility

SMSTS is designed for site managers and people with wider responsibility for planning, monitoring and controlling construction work.

4

Check the employer requirement

A certificate does not replace experience or the right CSCS route. Confirm what the employer and project require before paying.

5

Plan the next step after the course

Use the training alongside real evidence of leading people, managing safety, recording work and delivering a programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SMSTS and SSSTS?▼

SSSTS is aimed at people supervising work and teams. SMSTS is aimed at site managers and people with wider responsibility for managing construction work.

How long are the SSSTS and SMSTS courses?▼

Current CITB Site Safety Plus scheme rules list SSSTS as two days and SMSTS as five days. Check the current course listing before booking.

Do I need SSSTS before SMSTS?▼

Not automatically. The right course depends on your job and responsibility. Speak to the employer or training provider if the role requirement is unclear.

Does SMSTS get you a CSCS Black Card?▼

SMSTS is safety training and is not, by itself, the qualification route for a CSCS Manager card. Check the official card requirements for your occupation and qualification.

Will SSSTS increase my salary?▼

It can support applications for supervisory work, but pay rises come from the role, responsibility, experience and employer rather than the certificate alone.

How long do SMSTS and SSSTS certificates last?▼

CITB currently states that both certificates are valid for five years. Renewal courses must be completed before the certificate expires, so check the current CITB course rules and your expiry date.
