Cards and qualifications

ECS Card Guide: Types, ECS Test and How to Apply

ECS is the card scheme for electrotechnical occupations. Your card depends on your work and qualifications: an apprentice or labourer card is not an electrician’s Gold card. The CITB test is not accepted as the ECS assessment. Use JIB/ECS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or SJIB in Scotland. Check the official route before buying training.

Which ECS card should I check?

Choose by your actual role, not by the colour you would like. An Installation Electrician Gold card requires the recognised Level 3 competence route, the relevant ECS safety evidence and a recognised BS 7671 qualification. A short wiring-regulations course alone does not meet those requirements.

An Apprentice card is for people on a formal electrotechnical apprenticeship working under supervision. Ask your training provider about registration and the evidence it supplies. Direct applications require the training agreement and current ECS assessment.

An Electrical Labourer card covers supervised support work, not electrician craft work. Its qualification, safety and industry-engagement requirements depend on the application route. Check the full list with ECS. Other occupations have their own card types. These routes were checked on 27 September 2026.

ECS test: what it does and does not cover

The ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment is separate from the CITB HS&E test. ECS says a pass is valid for two years in which to apply for a card. That assessment period is not your card’s expiry date.

Some card routes accept specified exemptions; others do not. Check the exact card’s requirements before booking or assuming a certificate exempts you. Use ECS for current fees, revision materials, booking and accessibility support. A test pass by itself does not establish occupational competence. Checked 27 September 2026.

Apply through the right scheme for your nation

JIB administers ECS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; Scotland uses SJIB. Start with the ECS application checklist or SJIB’s Scottish guidance. UKTJ does not issue or verify cards and is not affiliated with these schemes.

The electrical scheme sits within the wider construction-card system, but its requirements are not interchangeable with a Labourer CSCS application. For other construction occupations, read our CSCS card guide. Ask the employer which card and qualifications the particular job needs.

Keep useful evidence ready for applications

Only list cards and qualifications you actually hold. Record the expiry printed on the card; do not calculate it from a course or assessment date. Keep equipment categories and any restrictions in your own records.

Save your cards and choose expiry reminders, then explicitly add them to your free electrician CV. Entries remain self-declared. You can use the CV builder without an account.

Compare electrician pay, check current electrician vacancies and choose a location for your alerts. Looking for your first role? Start with paid electrician apprenticeships and the apprentice wage guide, not a promise that buying a course guarantees employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an ECS card the same as a CSCS card?▼

ECS is the electrotechnical card scheme with occupation-specific requirements. Do not assume another construction card or test qualifies you for electrical work.

Can I use my CITB test for an ECS card?▼

ECS states that the CITB HS&E test is not accepted as its assessment. Check the particular card for the ECS assessment requirement and any permitted exemptions.

Does an 18th Edition course alone qualify me for an ECS Gold card?▼

No. The Installation Electrician route also requires recognised occupational competence and the required safety evidence. Check ECS’s complete eligibility list.

Can apprentices get an ECS card?▼

There is a supervised apprentice route for a formal electrotechnical apprenticeship. Ask the training provider about registration and the evidence required.

Where do I apply in Scotland?▼

Use SJIB for Scottish applications and requirements. JIB administers ECS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
