NVQ Qualifications Explained: Levels, Trades, Costs

NVQs are the backbone of trade qualifications in the UK. Whether you want a CSCS card, a better job, or to go self-employed, you will probably need an NVQ. This guide explains exactly what they are, what level you need, and how much they cost.

What Is an NVQ?

An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based qualification that proves you can do a specific job to the required standard. Unlike academic qualifications, NVQs are assessed through practical observation and evidence from your actual work — not written exams.

In the construction and trades industry, NVQs are essential. They are required for CSCS cards (Blue and Gold levels), apprenticeship completion, and by most employers as proof of competence.

NVQs range from Level 1 (entry-level) to Level 7 (equivalent to a masters degree). For most trades, you will aim for Level 2 (qualified) and then optionally Level 3 (advanced/supervisory).

How to Get an NVQ

1

Through an Apprenticeship (Free)

The most common route. Your NVQ is built into the apprenticeship programme and fully funded by your employer. You earn while you learn and gain your NVQ through on-the-job assessment.

2

On-Site Assessment (Already Working)

If you are already working in a trade but lack the formal NVQ, an approved assessor can visit your workplace to assess your competence. This is the quickest route if you have experience — typically 3–6 months. Providers include NOCN, City & Guilds centres, and private NVQ assessors.

3

College Course

Full-time or part-time college courses include the NVQ as part of the programme. This suits people who are not yet working in the trade and want structured learning with practical workshops.

NVQ vs City & Guilds vs Diploma: What Is the Difference?

QualificationHow It Is AssessedWhat It Proves
NVQWorkplace observation + portfolio evidenceYou can DO the job competently
City & Guilds DiplomaWritten exams + practical tests (usually at college)You KNOW the theory and have practiced the skills
ApprenticeshipCombination of NVQ + technical certificate + functional skillsYou have completed a full training programme

In short: the City & Guilds Diploma proves you know the theory. The NVQ proves you can do the practical work. An apprenticeship includes both. For CSCS card applications, the NVQ is what matters most.

Funding Your NVQ

Free via Apprenticeship

If you are an apprentice, your NVQ is fully funded by your employer through the apprenticeship levy. This is the most cost-effective route.

Advanced Learner Loan

Available for anyone aged 19+ studying Level 3–6 qualifications. You repay only when earning above the threshold, similar to student loans.

Employer-Funded

Some employers will pay for your NVQ, especially if you are already working for them and they want to upskill their workforce.

Self-Funded

NVQ assessment costs £1,000–£3,000 depending on the trade and level. Most providers offer payment plans of £100–£250 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does NVQ stand for?

NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification. It is a work-based qualification that proves your competence in a specific trade or occupation. NVQs are assessed in the workplace through observation and portfolio evidence, rather than written exams.

Is an NVQ the same as a City & Guilds?

Not exactly. City & Guilds is an awarding body that issues qualifications, including NVQs. An NVQ is a type of qualification; City & Guilds is one of the organisations that awards them. Other awarding bodies include EAL, Pearson (BTEC), and NOCN.

Can I get an NVQ without going to college?

Yes. NVQs are work-based qualifications assessed in the workplace. If you are already working in a trade, you can be assessed on the job by an approved NVQ assessor. Many assessment centres offer "on-site assessment" where they come to your workplace.

How long does an NVQ take?

NVQ Level 2 typically takes 12–18 months. NVQ Level 3 takes 12–24 months. The exact duration depends on your existing experience, the trade, and how quickly you can complete the required evidence and observations.

Do I need an NVQ to get a CSCS card?

For the Green Labourer card, no — you only need the CITB test. For Blue (Skilled Worker) and Gold (Advanced Craft) cards, yes — you need the relevant NVQ at Level 2 or Level 3 respectively. See our CSCS card guide for full details.

Is an NVQ equivalent to a degree?

NVQ Level 4 is broadly equivalent to a foundation degree or HNC. NVQ Level 5 is equivalent to a foundation degree or HND. NVQ Level 6 is equivalent to a bachelors degree. NVQ Level 7 is equivalent to a masters degree. However, they are vocational rather than academic qualifications.

Can I do an NVQ as a mature student?

Absolutely. There is no age limit for NVQs. Many adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s gain NVQs, either through apprenticeships, on-the-job assessment, or college courses. Advanced Learner Loans are available for Level 3+ qualifications.
