Why Train as a Plumber?

Plumbing is one of the most reliable trades in the UK. Every home and commercial building needs plumbing, and the work can't be offshored or automated. The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) estimates that the UK needs at least 30,000 new plumbers over the next decade to replace retirees and meet growing demand from new-build housing.

Plumbing also offers one of the clearest upselling paths in the trades. Once you're qualified as a plumber, you can add gas qualifications to become a Gas Safe registered heating engineer — which significantly increases your earning potential. A Gas Safe engineer typically charges £60–£100+ per hour compared to £40–£60 for general plumbing.

Qualifications You Need

Core Plumbing Qualifications

• Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing (6035-02): The starting point. Covers cold water systems, hot water systems, central heating, sanitation, and rainwater systems. Typically takes 1 year full-time or can be done in 8–12 weeks on an intensive course.
• Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing (6035-03): Builds on Level 2 with complex systems, unvented hot water, and system design. Required for progression and some employer roles.
• NVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing & Heating: The practical competence qualification. Like electrical, you need both the technical diploma and the NVQ to be fully qualified. The NVQ requires evidence of real-world work.

Gas Qualifications (Optional but Highly Recommended)

• ACS Gas Assessment (CCN1, CKR1, CPA1, etc.): The Accredited Certification Scheme assessments you must pass to get on the Gas Safe Register. CCN1 covers core gas safety; the others cover specific appliance types (cookers, fires, boilers). Each has a practical and theory component.
• Unvented Hot Water Systems (G3): Required to work on sealed hot water systems (common in modern homes). A short course, usually 1–2 days.
• Water Regulations (formerly WRAS): Good practice qualification covering legal requirements for water supply installation.
• Renewable Technologies: Heat pumps, solar thermal, and biomass qualifications are growing in demand with the Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme and push towards net zero.

Training Routes

1. Apprenticeship (2–4 years)

The traditional route into plumbing. You'll work for a plumbing or heating company while attending college (day release or block release). The Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship standard takes 4 years and includes the full NVQ. In Scotland, the SNIPEF apprenticeship is the equivalent pathway. Your employer covers training costs and you earn a wage from day one.

2. Fast-Track Courses (4–20 weeks)

Private training providers offer intensive plumbing courses that cover Level 2 and 3 technical certificates in weeks rather than years. Costs range from £3,000 for a basic Level 2 course to £10,000+ for comprehensive packages that include gas training. You'll still need to complete an NVQ through workplace evidence, which typically takes 6–12 months of supervised work.

Be realistic: A 4-week plumbing course gives you technical knowledge, not experience. Most employers and customers won't trust someone with just a fast-track certificate. Plan on 6–12 months working with an experienced plumber before going solo.

3. College Course (1–2 years)

FE colleges offer full-time and part-time plumbing courses, often at lower cost than private providers. Full-time courses typically run September to June. Part-time or evening courses spread the same content over 1–2 years. Costs are often covered for 16–18 year-olds and may be subsidised for adults through the Adult Education Budget.
