Reference: JOB00202 Location: London E3 4PB and surrounding areas Salary: £44,532.71 per year Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week Closing date: 18 September 2026 THE OPPORTUNITY Gateway Housing Association is looking for a fully qualified, experienced Multi Trader to join its in-house repairs team. You’ll deliver high-quality, customer-focused reactive repairs and minor planned works across occupied and void social housing properties in London. Working independently and alongside colleagues, you’ll diagnose faults, choose practical repair solutions, complete work safely and aim to get each job right first time. The role suits an experienced trades operative with strong practical ability across plumbing, carpentry, plastering, tiling, decorating and general building maintenance, backed by excellent fault-diagnosis and customer-service skills. WHAT YOU’LL DO - Complete reactive repairs and minor planned works to a high standard across multiple trades. - Diagnose faults accurately, identify root causes and select appropriate repair solutions. - Organise your workload to meet appointments, emergencies, productivity targets and service-level agreements. - Communicate clearly and professionally with residents about required work, progress and outcomes. - Carry out dynamic risk assessments, use PPE correctly and follow health and safety requirements, including asbestos awareness, COSHH and manual handling. - Record repairs, materials, risk assessments and follow-on work accurately, and report access issues or safeguarding concerns. - Leave properties safe, clean and tidy. - Take proper care of stock, tools and van resources, keeping them clean, safe and serviceable. - Work closely with other operatives, supervisors, planners, schedulers and compliance colleagues, supporting less experienced colleagues or apprentices where needed. ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - Proven experience as a Multi Trader or skilled trades operative in a repairs environment. - Strong practical ability across several trades, such as plumbing, carpentry, plastering, tiling and general maintenance. - Experience completing reactive repairs in occupied properties. - Strong customer-facing experience and clear communication skills. - Excellent fault-diagnosis and problem-solving ability. - The ability to work independently and manage a varied workload effectively. - Knowledge of multi-trade repair methods and materials. - A strong understanding of health and safety law, safe systems of work and working safely in occupied homes. - Awareness of housing-repair compliance requirements, including asbestos and fire safety. - A reliable, punctual and professional approach. DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - Experience in social housing, a local authority or a direct labour organisation. - Basic IT skills for mobile job-management systems. - Awareness of safeguarding and vulnerability when working in residents’ homes. - Experience supporting or mentoring apprentices or less experienced operatives. - Knowledge of housing-regulation standards and customer expectations in social housing.
