Trade Retraining Grants & Funding in Derry

Northern Ireland has its own skills funding system, separate from England's AEB. Derry's North West Regional College (NWRC) is the main provider, with DfE NI funding making most trade courses free or heavily subsidised. Here's how to access funded training in the North West.

How Trade Training Funding Works in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's skills system is managed by the Department for the Economy (DfE NI), not the ESFA or any combined authority. This means different rules from England, Scotland, or Wales — and in many ways, more generous ones. Most further education courses at NI colleges are either free or charged at heavily subsidised rates, with no student loans required at FE level.

Derry is experiencing significant investment. The A6 upgrade, Derry City and Strabane District Council's Strategic Growth Plan, the Foyle Maritime Festival infrastructure, and ongoing housing developments across the city mean demand for skilled tradespeople is strong. The cross-border dimension also opens opportunities — many Derry-based tradespeople work on projects in Donegal and the wider north-west of Ireland.

Who Gets Free or Subsidised Training?

  • Aged 16–19 — free full-time further education courses at any NI college
  • Aged 19+ on benefits — fee remission (free) for most FE courses including construction trades
  • Aged 19+ employed or unemployed — heavily subsidised FE fees, typically £100–£500 per year for a full-time trade course (compared to £3,000+ in England)
  • Essential Skills — free literacy and numeracy up to Level 2 for all adults
  • Apprenticeships — all NI apprenticeships are funded by DfE NI with no cost to the apprentice

North West Regional College (NWRC)

NWRC is the main further education provider for Derry, Strabane, and Limavady. It's one of six regional colleges in Northern Ireland and has excellent construction training facilities across its campuses.

NWRC Strand Road Campus (Derry City Centre)

The main Derry campus houses construction workshops for Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, and Plastering. Courses run from Level 1 through Level 3, with both full-time and part-time (day release) options for apprentices. The campus recently benefited from investment in updated workshop facilities.

NWRC Greystone Campus (Limavady)

Serves the Causeway Coast and Roe Valley area. Construction courses available in Carpentry, Bricklaying, and Electrical Installation. Smaller campus but ideal for residents in Limavady, Coleraine, and surrounding rural areas who don't want to travel to Derry city centre daily.

NWRC Strabane Campus

Serves Strabane and the Tyrone border area. Offers entry-level and Level 2 construction courses. Smaller provision but well-suited for residents in the Strabane district and Lifford/Donegal border area.

South West College (Omagh & Enniskillen)

For those in the wider west of Northern Ireland, South West College has campuses in Omagh, Enniskillen, Dungannon, and Cookstown. Construction courses include Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, and Bricklaying. Accessible for south Tyrone and Fermanagh residents.

NI-Specific Programmes

Assured Skills Programme

DfE NI's Assured Skills programme provides free pre-employment training academies, typically lasting 6–12 weeks. While more commonly associated with tech and manufacturing, construction Assured Skills academies do run, particularly when major employers or projects need a pipeline of trained workers. Check the DfE NI website for current offerings.

NI Apprenticeships

Northern Ireland's apprenticeship system is fully funded by DfE NI. Construction apprenticeships in Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry, Bricklaying, and other trades are available through NWRC and employer partners. Apprentices earn a wage while training — starting from around £5.28/hour (NI apprentice rate) but often higher with established employers. There's no upper age limit for NI apprenticeships.

CITB NI Grant Scheme

The Construction Industry Training Board Northern Ireland (CITB NI) provides grants to employers who train their workforce. If you're already working for a construction firm in Derry, your employer can claim CITB NI grants to fund your qualifications — from NVQs to specialist tickets like IPAF and PASMA.

Cross-Border Opportunities

Derry's border location opens up cross-border training options. SOLAS (the Irish further education authority) funds training through ETBs (Education and Training Boards) in Donegal and the Republic. Irish residents in the border area can also access some NWRC courses. Construction qualifications are largely recognised on both sides of the border, making Derry tradespeople highly mobile.

How to Apply — Step by Step

  1. 1. Check what you need: Unlike England, NI doesn't have the same Level 2/3 restrictions. Most FE courses are open to adults regardless of existing qualifications.
  2. 2. Pick your trade: See our career guides for salary, demand, and training details.
  3. 3. Contact NWRC: Call the Strand Road campus admissions team on 028 7127 6000. Ask about construction courses and fee status — many courses are free for those on benefits.
  4. 4. Enrol: Bring ID, proof of address, and qualification certificates. If you're on benefits, bring your benefit letter for fee remission.
  5. 5. Consider an apprenticeship: If you can find a willing employer, a DfE NI funded apprenticeship lets you earn and learn with no training costs at all.
