SSE Apprenticeships: Entry Routes and How to Apply

SSE offers apprenticeship and trainee routes, but the main apprenticeship search showed no matching vacancies when checked. Separate adult trainee roles were advertised. Check the route, location and current advert before applying.

UK Trade Jobs is independent of SSE. Applications go to the employer; this guide does not reserve a place.

What is confirmed now?

Checked 25 October 2026: the main apprenticeship search showed no matches. That does not mean all SSE recruitment is closed. An adult trainee linesperson vacancy in Oxford was advertised separately; its availability can change.SSE: main apprenticeship vacancy search · SSE: Oxford adult trainee linesperson advert (separate route; may close)

Starting pay
Current apprenticeship pay is unconfirmed. SSE’s general pages show differing figures without a clear current intake. Use the salary and hours in the actual vacancy.SSE: early careers FAQ (pay and calendar not confirmed for a new intake) · SSEN Transmission: programme information (conflicts with general FAQ)
Entry requirements
Requirements vary by route. SSE says many programmes have no minimum grades; its FAQ gives a minimum age of 16 at the start and no upper age limit. Read any additional conditions in the advert.SSE: apprenticeships, trainees and recruitment process · SSE: early careers FAQ (pay and calendar not confirmed for a new intake)
Applications
No next apprenticeship opening date is confirmed here. The general FAQ and Transmission programme page give different recruitment months, so neither is a reliable deadline for a future intake.SSE: early careers FAQ (pay and calendar not confirmed for a new intake) · SSEN Transmission: programme information (conflicts with general FAQ)
Training
SSE’s overview describes paid work towards an accredited qualification, generally over two to four years. Confirm the duration and qualification for your chosen route.SSE: apprenticeships, trainees and recruitment process

Choose the right route

Entry-level apprenticeships

Programme examples include mechanical, control and instrumentation, fitter, lines and multi-craft roles. These are examples of routes, not a list of places currently open. Check the work location, training provider and entry conditions.SSE: entry-level programmes

Higher apprenticeships and trainees

SSE describes routes towards Level 4, HNC, HND or degree qualifications, including electrical power network engineering and construction management. A higher route may have different qualifications and duties from an entry-level apprenticeship.SSE: higher apprenticeships and trainees

Adult trainee jobs

The separate Oxford adult trainee linesperson advert described an 18–24-month programme with a full UK driving licence and transport requirements. That specific job is not evidence of the pay or requirements for SSE’s standard apprenticeships. Check whether it is still open.SSE: Oxford adult trainee linesperson advert (separate route; may close)

How to apply

SSE describes an online application, online tests, a video interview and a final assessment. The last stage may be online or in person. Read the instructions for your route and ask for any assessment adjustments you need.SSE: apprenticeships, trainees and recruitment process

UKTJ’s preparation checklist

  • Choose the work you want to learn before choosing a programme name. Compare the day-to-day duties of lines, mechanical and electrical network roles.
  • Check the actual work and training locations. Do not assume every SSE business recruits in every UK nation.
  • Prepare truthful examples of solving a problem, working safely and learning something practical. Follow the application instructions instead of sending a generic CV everywhere.
  • Check starting pay, travel and accommodation before accepting an offer. Ask what qualification you will gain and how progress is assessed.

Common questions

When do SSE apprenticeships open?

The main apprenticeship search showed no matches on 25 October 2026. We have not confirmed the next opening date. General programme pages give different recruitment months; use the current vacancy page for a real deadline.SSE: main apprenticeship vacancy search · SSE: early careers FAQ (pay and calendar not confirmed for a new intake) · SSEN Transmission: programme information (conflicts with general FAQ)

How much are SSE apprentices paid?

A current apprenticeship salary was not verified. The general pages contain different figures without a clear current intake. Can I apply without strong exam grades?

SSE says many programmes have no minimum grade requirements. That is not a promise that every route has the same entry rules: check the apprenticeship or higher trainee advert before applying.SSE: apprenticeships, trainees and recruitment process · SSE: higher apprenticeships and trainees

Are adult trainee roles the same as apprenticeships?

Do not assume so. SSE also advertises separate adult trainee jobs, including a linesperson route. Read the advert for its training, qualification, pay and entry conditions rather than borrowing them for another programme.SSE: Oxford adult trainee linesperson advert (separate route; may close)
