Network Rail Apprenticeships: Routes and How to Apply

Start by choosing engineering or railway operations, then the nation where you want to work. Engineering applications for 2026 have closed; Network Rail is taking registrations of interest for 2027. That is not an application for a place.

UK Trade Jobs is independent of Network Rail. Applications go to the employer; this guide does not reserve a place.

What is confirmed now?

Checked 25 October 2026: both engineering programme pages point to 2027 interest registration. The separate operations page also showed no vacancies. Next-intake engineering pay and exact application dates are not confirmed here.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales · Network Rail: engineering in Scotland · Network Rail: operations apprenticeship

At a glance

Starting pay
The engineering pages still show a salary beside 2026 start dates. Do not use that figure as a 2027 offer; wait for the new advert.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales · Network Rail: engineering in Scotland
Training
Scotland’s published scheme describes three years and an SCQF Level 7 qualification. England and Wales use a Level 3 route; confirm the next intake’s duration and arrangements in its advert.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales · Network Rail: engineering in Scotland
Work and travel
Engineering can involve nights, weekends, outdoor work and training away from home. Your pathway depends on the depot’s needs, rather than being a free choice of specialism.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales
Operations checks
Operations has its own entry, commuting and safety checks. Read those conditions before choosing a location; engineering information does not establish eligibility for an operations role.Network Rail: operations apprenticeship

Choose the right route

Engineering in England and Wales

The published scheme covers work on track, signalling, telecoms and electrical equipment. Its existing criteria ask for GCSE maths at 5–9, plus English, science and another subject at 4–9, or equivalents. These pages still describe the closed intake: recheck the 2027 vacancy.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales

Engineering in Scotland

The existing Scottish criteria use National 5s at A–C in English, science, maths and another subject, or equivalents. Applications of Maths is excluded. The page’s age cutoff belongs to 2026; do not roll it forward to 2027.Network Rail: engineering in Scotland

Rail infrastructure operations

This separate Level 3 route concerns running the railway, including operational placements and signalling training. Its page asks for applicants aged 18 or over and GCSE English and maths at 4–9 or equivalents. No vacancy was shown at this check; programme information is not an open offer.Network Rail: operations apprenticeship

How to apply

Use the engineering page for your nation or the separate operations page. Registering interest asks the employer for an update; apply only through a suitable advertised vacancy when recruitment opens. Follow that vacancy’s instructions and assessment timetable.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales · Network Rail: engineering in Scotland · Network Rail: operations apprenticeship

UKTJ’s preparation checklist

  • Choose whether you want to maintain railway equipment or help run railway operations. Write down what attracts you to the actual work.
  • Gather your certificates or predicted grades. Ask the employer about an equivalent qualification instead of converting grades yourself.
  • Check whether the work base, shifts, journey home and time away for training are practical for you. Ask about travel and accommodation costs.
  • Prepare true examples of teamwork, careful practical work and solving a problem. You can use school, work or activities you have actually done.

Common questions

Can I apply for a Network Rail apprenticeship now?

The engineering pages offered 2027 interest registration on 25 October 2026. Operations showed no vacancies. Check the relevant employer page again before making plans.Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales · Network Rail: engineering in Scotland · Network Rail: operations apprenticeship

Are the Scottish and English routes the same?

They use different qualifications and entry criteria. Use the Scottish scheme for National 5 and SCQF information, rather than treating England’s Level 3 description as UK-wide.Network Rail: engineering in Scotland · Network Rail: engineering in England and Wales

Can adults change career into railway operations?

The operations page welcomes career changers and says previous work experience is not required. Applicants must still meet its qualifications, age and other checks when a role is advertised.Network Rail: operations apprenticeship

Does an apprenticeship guarantee a signalling job?

No. The operations page describes possible later roles, including signalling, but progression depends on the role you secure. Do not treat examples of past progression as a job offer.Network Rail: operations apprenticeship
