National Grid apprenticeships: 2027 application guide

National Grid is preparing for its September 2027 apprenticeship intake. Applications were closed at our latest check. Start with the official programme page, then compare the role, location and entry requirements before you apply.

UK Trade Jobs is independent of National Grid. This guide helps you prepare; the employer handles recruitment.

Your next step

Check whether applications have opened, or use the employer’s registration-of-interest option. That registration is separate from applying.

These are the employer's programme conditions, not UK-wide apprenticeship rules. Recheck them on the advert for the intake and role you choose.

Choose the work, then the programme

The programme covers engineering and business routes. Engineering examples include cable jointing, overhead lines and substations; business routes include procurement and project management. Those examples are not a list of vacancies currently open.

Want practical network work?

Look closely at the tasks: equipment maintenance, cables, overhead lines or substations. Check travel, outdoor work, working hours and the qualification awarded. Ask about anything the advert leaves unclear.

Want to wire homes or buildings?

An electricity-network apprenticeship may lead to different work. Compare the qualification and duties with an electrical installation route.

UKTJ's preparation checklist

  • Engineering: choose an example of solving a practical problem or following a careful process. Be ready to explain your own part, including how you checked the result.
  • Business: choose an example of organising a task, comparing information or helping a team meet a deadline. School, work and voluntary activities can all provide truthful examples.
  • Either route: check the qualification, licence requirement and work base. Ask where training takes place, how much time away it involves and who pays for travel or accommodation.

These are preparation suggestions, not National Grid's assessment questions or a promise of selection.

Check the employer and location

National Grid Electricity Transmission owns and maintains the high-voltage network in England and Wales. National Grid Electricity Distribution covers the Midlands, South West England and South Wales. A network area is not a promise that there is an apprenticeship near you.

National Gas and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) are separate organisations. Their roles and application rules should not be treated as National Grid offers.

For each advert, check the employing business, work base, training location and any travel or relocation requirement. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, do not assume a UK-labelled programme has a local place: use the actual vacancy location.

How to prepare and apply

  1. Compare the adverts. Check the subjects and grades, pay, work base, qualification, duration and closing date. Pick the role you can explain an interest in.
  2. Get your information ready. Gather your education details and truthful examples of solving a problem, working with others or following safety instructions. Examples can come from school, work or activities you have actually done.
  3. Apply through the employer. The published process allows one active early-careers application. Read the form carefully and keep a copy of the advert and your answers. Check the application FAQs.
  4. Prepare for assessment. The employer describes an online assessment, followed by an assessment centre for successful candidates. Follow the instructions you receive and the deadline in your invitation; timing and activities depend on the programme. Check the assessment stages.

Have your information ready before recruitment opens. National Grid says roles close as places fill, so do not assume every role will stay available until one shared deadline. Read the employer's recruitment timing guidance.

National Grid allows AI-assisted research and CV preparation, but says not to use AI during interviews or assessments. Your application must reflect your own experience.

Check whether the pay works for you

Before accepting an offer, use its starting salary and hours to plan your budget. Check travel costs, any time away for training, accommodation arrangements and when pay can change. Ask which costs the employer covers.

Do not budget using an old apprentice advert or the salary of someone who has finished training. We have not verified a current role-specific starting salary for this intake.

Keep other routes open

You can compare other employers while waiting for this intake. Use the service for the nation where you want to work; the England search does not cover the whole UK.

Questions before you apply

Can I apply for a National Grid apprenticeship now?

On 25 October 2026, the dedicated apprenticeship page said applications were closed. Use the official programme page to check for changes and find its registration-of-interest link. Registering interest is not an application or a job offer.

Can I apply to more than one role?

National Grid’s early-careers process allows one active application across its apprenticeship, graduate and internship vacancies. Compare the available roles and locations before choosing. If you want to change an existing application, check the employer’s instructions first.

Do I need a CV or cover letter?

The current employer FAQ says neither upload is compulsory, although it encourages them. Follow the actual application form. Keep your qualification details and examples of your own work ready; do not invent experience.

Is this a route to becoming a domestic electrician?

Choose by the qualification and work described in the advert. A role maintaining electricity networks is different from wiring homes. If domestic electrical work is your goal, compare an electrical installation apprenticeship before deciding.

Will UKTJ alerts tell me when National Grid opens?

UKTJ has two separate options: job alerts for matching listings, and an optional National Grid intake alert for checked recruitment updates. Neither is an application or a guarantee of a vacancy. Use the intake alerts section to see the last check and confirm your email; check National Grid directly for its latest position.
