Step-by-Step Career Path
Meet Physical Requirements
Wind turbine work requires excellent physical fitness. You'll climb towers up to 100+ metres, work in confined spaces, and potentially work offshore for weeks at a time. Medical fitness requirements are strict.
Get Basic Electrical/Mechanical Skills
Many wind techs have backgrounds in electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic engineering. City & Guilds Level 2/3 in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering provides a good foundation.
Complete GWO Training
Global Wind Organisation (GWO) training is essential. Modules include Basic Safety Training, First Aid, Manual Handling, Working at Height, and Fire Awareness. Takes 5 days and costs £800-£1,200.
Get Offshore Certification (for offshore work)
BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) is required for offshore wind work. Covers helicopter safety, sea survival, and emergency response. Additional medical required.
Gain Experience
Start with onshore wind farms or renewable energy companies. Many wind turbine manufacturers (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, GE) offer apprenticeships and training programmes.
