EDF Apprenticeships: Maintenance Training and Applications

EDF’s Engineering Maintenance apprenticeships are advertised for a September 2027 start, with applications due by 30 October 2026. The four-year route starts with two years at college in Somerset, so check the time-away commitment as well as the station location.

UK Trade Jobs is independent of EDF. Applications go to the employer; this guide does not reserve a place.

What is confirmed now?

Checked 25 October 2026: official maintenance adverts were available for Hartlepool, Torness, Heysham and Sizewell B. Each gives a 30 October 2026 deadline. EDF may close roles early. Other apprenticeship programmes are expected to open in January 2027; no exact opening day is confirmed here.EDF: Hartlepool advert, reference 37010 · EDF: Torness advert, reference 37013 · EDF: Heysham advert, reference 37011 · EDF: Sizewell B advert, reference 37012 · EDF: apprenticeship programmes and selection

Starting pay
The four checked Engineering Maintenance adverts state £17,606 a year to start. Use the actual offer for hours, later increases and any allowances. This is not the salary for every EDF apprenticeship.EDF: Hartlepool advert, reference 37010 · EDF: Torness advert, reference 37013 · EDF: Heysham advert, reference 37011 · EDF: Sizewell B advert, reference 37012
Training and location
The programme lasts four years: two at the National College for Nuclear in Somerset, followed by two at your EDF station. EDF describes relocation and living support, but we have not verified a fixed amount or a promise that every cost is covered.EDF: Engineering Maintenance training
Qualifications
The current adverts ask for five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, or equivalent, including maths, English and two science or technical subjects, achieved or predicted. If you have Scottish qualifications, confirm the accepted equivalents with EDF rather than assuming a grade conversion.EDF: Hartlepool advert, reference 37010 · EDF: Torness advert, reference 37013
Security checks
The maintenance adverts say security vetting ordinarily requires residence in the UK for three of the previous five years. Ask EDF about your own circumstances; this wording should not be read as a blanket nationality rule.EDF: Hartlepool advert, reference 37010 · EDF: Torness advert, reference 37013

Choose the right route

Hartlepool and Heysham: northern England

The Hartlepool and Heysham 1/2 adverts both describe an early September 2027 start, with the first two years at college in Somerset and the next two at the named station. Follow the exact location’s advert to check whether applications remain open.EDF: Hartlepool advert, reference 37010 · EDF: Heysham advert, reference 37011

Torness and Sizewell B: Scotland and Suffolk

The Torness role is based at the station near Dunbar after the college stage; Sizewell B is in Leiston. Both use the same four-year training split. Living near a station does not remove the initial Somerset college commitment.EDF: Torness advert, reference 37013 · EDF: Sizewell B advert, reference 37012

What you will learn

Engineering Maintenance includes mechanical, electrical, and control and instrumentation specialisms. The programme describes a Level 3 apprenticeship and a BTEC National Diploma. Compare the actual tasks and qualification with the kind of work you want to do.EDF: Engineering Maintenance training

Other EDF programmes

EDF’s hub says further engineering, project management, chemistry and business programmes will open in January 2027. Their entry requirements, locations and pay may differ. The current maintenance adverts do not establish the terms of those later programmes.EDF: apprenticeship programmes and selection

How to apply

Use the official advert for your chosen station. It asks for a CV and answers to application questions. EDF describes an online assessment, video interview and assessment centre; follow your invitation for the exact stages. Check the advert promptly because roles may close early, and ask EDF about assessment adjustments if needed.EDF: Hartlepool advert, reference 37010 · EDF: apprenticeship programmes and selection

UKTJ’s preparation checklist

  • Compare the first two years in Somerset with your family, travel and living arrangements. Ask what accommodation and relocation support covers before accepting an offer.
  • Gather your achieved or predicted grades and check the required subject mix. Ask EDF about any qualification equivalence you cannot confirm.
  • Prepare a truthful CV and examples of practical interests, solving a problem and working with others. School, college and activities can provide examples without inventing work experience.
  • Keep a copy of the advert, the station name and your application answers. If an advert has closed, check the official hub for other programmes rather than using an old application link.

The Torness advert uses GCSE-or-equivalent entry wording and the programme information also refers to National 5 qualifications. Do I need previous work experience?

EDF’s Early Careers hub says previous work experience is not required. You still need to meet the qualification and other conditions for the route. Does every EDF apprenticeship pay £17,606?

No. That starting annual salary comes from the four checked Engineering Maintenance adverts.
